EXPERT'S TIPS
1. The best of activities will fail if we don't help start the process. Set up & demonstrate the activity by simply "doing" the first step with your family member.

2. It's best to avoid phrasing invitations in the Yes/No format, such as "Would you like to go to the park today?" Rather, say "We're going to the park today." Here, No is not offered as an option & "we" is always more fun and less threatening!

Encouraging Participation

In this video, you'll learn how to encourage a person who's resistant to participating in an activity. Note how a friendly approach and simple expressions like "Can you help me?" or "Let's just try, ok?" help dissolve the resistance. Although this video was originally made for professional caregivers, these simple and highly effective strategies are essential for every caregiver.

This video clip is from the professional training DVD "Accepting the Challenge," produced by the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, Raleigh, NC.
